In addition to allowing the family dog to lick her baby in its' face/mouth, my co-worker also lets her daughter eat off the table in restaurants.

We went to a Chinese take-out place over the weekend and me and my buddy both ate out of plates. My friend then took food from her plate and put it on the table for the baby to eat.

I offered to let the baby use the spare plate my soup bowl was on top of, but she was like ,"No that's okay".

When my daughter was a baby, my wife was really cautious about stuff like this. Neither of us let the baby eat off the table.

No, that's just gross! You should ask your co-worker if she would eat off the table top? I always carry a small plastic bowl and spoon for my baby so that I can place food for him in there. Besides being so obviously unsanitary, she is teaching her baby horrible manners. It's one thing for her baby to eat off of her high chair table top (where hopefully it's being cleaned) it's another for her to eat off of a public restaurants table, can you imagine the germs???

I think its pretty gross, god only knows what else has been on that table that is now going into the babies mouth. If you do let them eat off of the table then I would keep some clorox wipes in my diaper bag to sanatize the table first. Good Luck

You could buy your friend the plastic disposable table covers that Babies R Us sells. Other than that, it's not your kid. You probably make decisions others don't approve of too. We all do. It's not the best thing to eat off of a public table, but most likely, it won't kill the baby or make him/her sick. There is a small possibility of that, you could bring that up to your friend as well.

And for the record, a dog's saliva is not cleaner than a human's, that old wives' tale is because dogs like to lick wounds to get the nasty bacteria out of them. The wounds didn't get infected, not because the dog's saliva was clean, but because the dogs ate the bacteria. Gross. Dogs eat poop and drink from the toilet. Their saliva is not cleaner than humans.

I usually use a plate, but that is my choice. I mean... you can't judge everyone else by what your wife does. If my husband did that, the whole WORLD wouldn't live up to his expectations *wink*
Hopefully she used a wipe, but honestly... if you ask any microbiologist, the kitchen sink is the dirtiest place in the house, and how often do we wash veggies etc, to give to our kids?
And the dog thing? I don't like my mom's dog to lick my kids in the face and I stop them from doing it...but I don't have a fit over it. I figure it is helping build their immune system.
We have created so many super resistant germs because of over use of antibacterials and anti biotics that it is appalling. Hopefully, commonsense will prevail and the kneejerk mentality on both sides of the issue will just chill out.

It's probably not the most sanitary of surfaces, but I've let my kids eat off the table, JUST so they wouldn't knock the breakable dishes off the table. Little kids are unpredictable in unfamiliar surroundings. Most often I'd feed my kids off my silverware or bring along a booster with tray, though, or bring a plastic setting.

Eating out with kids doesn't always work out as we'd hope.

I only did this if I had antibacterial wipes with me. I have been in food service for over 20 years so I know how clean (Or not so clean) places are. They usually use a bleach water mixture to clean the tables with between uses, but I would still not trust it.
BTW: My son was a preemie, so we had to be extra careful about germs for his first year.

thats kinda gross, but i understand if the child doenst like to eat from dishes or has a tendancy to break them... for xmas, you should go to Babies r us and purchase disposable place mats that they can take with them and toss or leave at the restuaraunt... those would be more sanitary then the table.. hopefully she did wipe it a little bit before she put food on it!
gross

Good for your wife. Stop judging other mothers. A dog's saliva is cleaner than a humans. So allowing the dog to lick the child is better than allowing a person to kiss the baby. The only harm that can come from a restaurant table is germs.

PS- you can't keep a baby from all germs and it is not healthy for their immune system to do so.

We put a disposable mat down so we can do that. Otherwise we have to worry about our daughter playing or throwing the plate. One less thing to worry about. We dont need to pay for another patrons meal because they were hit with a flying plate.

Restaurant tables are not clean enough to eat off of, generally speaking. I would not let my child eat off of them.
