I would recommend Dell because they are very reliable. You can customize what you put into them as well, including how much space you want. They are a bit more expensive though, on the other hand.

Nowadays, any reputable computer store (such as Dell or IBM) can sell you a computer that will do a decent job of what you want.

There are just a few things to look for: You sound like you don't know much about computers, so you probably want one with a fairly comprehensive and long-lasting warranty. Either that or you'll have to learn how to do some basic computer maintenance yourself.

Tell them you want a big hard drive. Hard drives are cheap. You should be able get at least 200 gigabytes fairly cheaply. If you find that it's a significant price boost (say more than $100) to get a hard drive that big (as opposed to say 40 or 80 GB), just buy a secondary hard drive and install it at your leisure. (It'll take you a while to fill even a small hard drive, so you can take your time with this.)

If you get Windows Vista (as you probably will nowadays), make sure that you have AT LEAST 1 gigabyte of RAM. A lot of computers (especially laptops) recently come with 512 megabytes of RAM (that is one-half of one GB). This is the official minimum to install Windows Vista. Unfortunately, it is not usually enough for Vista to run smoothly. This is a very important detail. Don't let them screw you over on that. I've seen several people get brand new laptops that just don't function because they're not powerful enough for Vista.

Out of all the laptops I've had I liked the Sony VAIO's the best, in your case i would costomize one of them to get a big Hard Drive.
