Firenze (Florence) is one of the main tourist destinations in Italy; there are a LOT of interesting things to see and do there. While you're there try the Ribollita (soup) - it's a Tuscan speciality that's especially good in the winter. The cinghiale (wild boar) is also very good. There are also a lot of other interesting towns in Tuscany. Siena has even more medieval feel than Florence because it lost the war between the two cities and couldn't afford to modernize for a long time. San Gimignano is worth visiting while you're in Tuscany. It's known for it's old towers. Lucca also has an interesting old town. Many tourists go to Pisa to see the Leaning Tower and then go to Lucca for the rest of the day. There's a music market in Lucca on the 13th of January. Arezzo also has an interesting old town.

I've been to Tuscany twice. The first time we stayed in Florence and made day trips to Siena and San Gimignano. All the major sites are in Florence (Duomo, Uffizi Gallery for Botticelli paintings, Galleria dell' Academia for the statue of David, etc).

If you are looking for a different experience try an agroturismo. Basically, staying in a farmhouse. We stayed on a vineyard in San Gimignano surrounded by the rolling Tuscan hills and olive trees. It was tranquil and romantic.

Florence is lovely. From there you can make day trips by train or bus.

Avoid Pisa. It's not nice to stay, but does make an interesting day trip from Florence.

Siena is also supposed to be lovely, I intend heading there next time I'm in the area.
