Some people believe that knowledge is the greatest thing you can attain. So, in the context of this quote... The more you know, the more you understand what is important, thereby realizing that material things are not important in determing someone's worth.
Geez, I hope that made sense. :)

'Poor' men in this case wants everything, lets every small thing affect them, must have a hand in everything, and doesn't realize that there are some things that he can let slip by that will not have a negative impact on him.
The rich man realizes he doesn't need to have every item that comes out, just the ones that he will enjoy. He lets go of control of those things that come up without worry. He realizes that the gain he would realize from some actions are not worth the effort or risk, and spends his time doing those things he actually enjoys than worrying on it's success.

The more we can let things alone, the more our needs are being met by what we already have. If I need not any more than what I already have, then my needs are being met, and I am rich.

That sounds buddist , it means for me that you are rich when you let go of materialism : buy , buy , buy ! public recognition: im the best look at me!!!!
Always competing : yes im always better than you!!
The bottom line is that when you empty yourself from ordinary living you can afford to find your higher purpose !!
