What Jeremy wrote.

Santo's BBWAA eligibility expired ten years ago (as ballots are counted). Here's his voting history on the writer's ballot: http://web.baseballhalloffame.org/playerVoting.do?playerId=121697

Since then he has come under the purview of the Veterans Committee, where he has done better but still not enough. The VC voting procedures were revamped earlier this year, and his next chance (not guaranteed he'll be on the ballot, but by now it's hard to imagine he won't make the cut) will be in late 2008 for the 2009 induction class.

VC voting history (since 2003; previous votes by the previous VC edition were never released)
2003 -- 56.8% (third highest on the ballot)
2005 -- 65.0% (tied for highest)
2007 -- 69.5% (highest)

There's no accurate way of predicting what might happen in 2009 since it will be a completely new electorate -- but this electorate will be almost entirely his peers, the living Hall Of Fame honorees (current headcount, 62), which is a player-majority group. So perhaps he finally gets his due in 2009 -- here's hoping.

After that if they make it to 15 years, and not elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame, they are done with the writers, now they have to get in through the Veterans Committee, which is players, mangers, umpries, etc that are well (of course) living, cause you can't vote if you are dead. And they vote every 2 yers so they have voted in 2003, 2005, and 2007, so the next time they will vote is 2009 for election for the Hall of Fame. This past year Ron Santo fell 5 votes short of the Hall of Fame election. And so far, all 3 years they have failed to elect anybody to the Hall of Fame. And it is my undrstanding that they are supposed to help players like Ron Santo get to the Hall of Fame, but just have done the compelete oppoiste. But he is on the ballot for the Ford Frick award, and you can help vote for him right now. If you like to that, you can look for it on http://www.mlb.com . But I don't know if Ron Santo or any other players thave have been wiating for more then 15 years to get in the Hall of Fame, that can no longer be voted in by the writers, will want to get thier hopes up for 2009.

You get removed from the BBWAA ballot (a) if you've been on it for 15 years without being elected, or (b) you get less than 5% in any balloting. Santo's 15th year on the ballot was 1998, when he received 43.1% of the vote. (It looks like he was removed from the ballot after only received 3.9% in 1980, his first year on the ballot, but was added back on in 1985.)

Santo is still eligible to be elected by the Veterans Committee. Last year, he received 69.5% of the vote. He will be eligible for consideration when they next vote on players in 2009.

Santo has had more chances than anyone in history, yet he still is not in. You would think he would take that as a hint that he is not good enough, but his ego just won't let him understand that he is not a Hall of Fame player. So what does he do now - he is trying to drum up support to get him in as a broadcaster!! He has to be the worst in baseball, and he is trying to get in as a broadcaster!! He even started bitching about not wanting to get in when he is dead, that he wants in now so he can enjoy it! What a tool....

The writers have lost their feel for the game. The Hall of Fame isn't about greatness anymore. It's about pleasing the writers. They are idiots. The selection should not be left to just one group, particularly one as grossly incompetent as the writers. Ron Santo IS a Hall of Famer, period. The writers suck.

His time on the ballot had expired. Only get 15 years.

He'll have his shot with the veterans committe and I believe they'll correct the error and get him in.

Though I like to say you really aren't a HOF player if you can't get in by the fifth ballot.

He could only be on for 15 years. That has expired. Now it is up to the Veteran's committee to see if they will let him in.

His numbers simply aren't there; not that Kirby Puckett's were for that matter, but he got in.
