If you just want to make a few bucks here and there, go through your closets and sell those things that you don't want any more. Since you won't be using them, anything you get for them will be gravy. Be sure you cover shipping cost and e-bay fees.

You kind of have to know, and do a lot of research to know. For example, certain items from certain animes (japanese animation cartoons) sell for really good prices, but you'd have to know what kinds, and what sorts of products (plushies, figures, dvds, etc).
Look at the item you have/had, and try to look up as many similar things like your item as you can. Watch how much people are putting up for, versus how much things are actually SELLING for. Also, watch shipping prices, and the person's descriptions. All of that can help you with listing your item.
Your items may not sell for much at first, but once you get the hang of it, you should find you are more knowledgable about what to sell and how to go about selling it. (A gallery picture definitely helps.)
My sister started out with eBay so I got a lot of my knowledge, and experience from her situations. I've made mistakes myself at the beginning, (put shipping costs too low therefore I lost money, didn't put up a good picture, etc.), but You get better at that, only with time.
Hope this helps! Good luck! :)
