It depends on the war you're writing about and whose side you're writing from. You gotta remember that wars are all going to be different, as are opposing sides. For the American Civil War, folks in the North are going to want to preserve the union early on while folks in the South are looking to break away from a government that they can no longer trust. The American Revolution the Biritish are looking to keep their colonies while the 13 colonies that rose up in rebellion are looking to break free and govern themselves (sounds a lot like the ACW, doesn't it).

There was a wonderful episode of M*A*S*H in which you had a wounded North Korean soldier and a South Korean guard. The guard really seemed to have it in for the wounded soldier, but you learned the real reason for this was because they were brothers. At the start of the war their father sent one south and one north so there was a chance atleast one son would survive. So the brother who went south had to act mean to his brother as if his commander and his buddies saw him being nice to his brother they'd think he was a spy and shot him. And if the other North Korean POWs saw the guard being nice to his brother who went north, they kill that brother.

So basically it was a brother versus brother and yet both really cared for each other type of thing. Something similar could have happened in one of the boarder states during the American Civil War. So that might be something to consider.

My Grandmother is from Germany. She lived via it. All her peers in top university had Hitler formative years uniforms. My grandmother used to be so deficient she could not have the funds for one. The most effective time I take into account her rather telling me something approximately it used to be while she confirmed me the photograph of her together with her 2 exceptional peers within the uniforms. I'll by no means put out of your mind how lovely I idea she used to be in that photograph. She additionally advised me approximately "Crystal Night" as she remembered it however I used to be lovely younger and do not take into account plenty. She had an excessively rough, very deficient lifestyles and she or he did not love to speak approximately it plenty. My mother has been to Germany and obvious the residence my grandma grew up in together with her grandmother (her mom used to be no longer rather a facet of her lifestyles). I love listening to individuals talk with a German accessory - it continually jogs my memory of her. It's additionally one of the vital motives I selected to educate my puppy in German instructions - she might have simply cherished him. (I received him no longer lengthy after she died.) She labored as a receptionist for the US Army in Germany wherein my Grandfather used to be stationed as an MP. That is wherein they met, and the way she ended up within the US.
