The nucleus of an atom has protons and neutrons. The number of protons defines the kind of atom - carbon has 6 protons, for example.

The number of neutrons can differ, though - each different number of neutrons for one number of protons is a different isotope of the element. Carbon has two stable isotopes, one with 6 and one with 7 neutrons. It has other unstable isotopes - too many or too few neutrons for the number of protons, and the atom will fall apart (i.e., be radioactive). Carbon with 8 neutrons (called "carbon 14", since 6+8=14) is radioactive.

Atoms are made of electrons, protons and neutrons. Protons are positively charged, and neutrons are neutral, or non-charged. The nucleus of the atom is made of protons and neutrons, and the negatively charged electrons move around the nucleus in orbitals. The number of protons determines what element the atom is, for example, an atom with 6 protons is carbon, one with 8 protons is oxygen, etc. The number of electrons determines the overall charge of the atom, so if there are 3 protons and 3 electrons, the atom is neutral, since the positive charges of the protons and the negative charges of the electrons cancel one another out. If, however, you had a Lithium atom with 2 electrons (remember that for it to be lithium it must have 3 protons) the charge is +1, and it is called a cation.

Neutrons have no effect on the charge of the atom since they are neutral, yet they effect the atomic chemistry (as opposed to electronic chemistry, meaning bonding characteristics) of an atom. Two atoms with identical numbers of protons are the same element, but if they have different numbers of neutrons, they are said to be isotopes of one another.

Yes, If she has had sex. Other people here said that you have to have your first period in order to get pregnant, but that is not true. You get your period after you ovulate and it is possible to get pregnant on the first time you ovulate, which would be before your first period. Edit: OH! you're asking WHY a young girl would get pregnant? That's easy, they are stupid. They think that sex is just for fun, it's cool, they are really in love with some guy or just plain hormone crazy. And even if they use a condom/ other contreceptives they are never 100% effective against preganancy or STDs (the only 100% method is abstinence which means not having sex). So yes a lot of these young girls have sex and VOILA they become pregnant.
