i got secondlife and whenever i try to start it either my entire screen goes black or there is a huge color deffect with the computer and it tells me i haveto reset the computer to get perfect visual or some crap like that, EVERY TIME! please help and i'm about to download a new quicktime update so please tell me what i should do.

Are you using Windows? Have you rebooted lately (turned the machine off)? Try that and try running secondlife before you run anything else.
Be sure that your DirectX is up to date. Thats the program that SecondLife talks to in order to draw to the screen.
Do Start->Run->dxdiag
which is the DX Diagnostic tool on your machine. Wait till the green bar (checking files) goes away then read thru the options
You probably should also visit the website for your graphic card and make sure that your video drivers are up to date.
Second Life uses the latest goodies of both those. It has no sympathy for people who are not up to date
