Depends on what you are looking to do. Just realize this, if you replace the hard drive, you will have to start all over again (unless you intend to continually switch your hard drives back and forth, which entails shutting off your computer and not being able to move files between the two hard drives).

However, there are some advantages to switching your internal drive. 1) The read/write times will be faster (this makes the biggest difference with movies and gaming) 2) You don't have to carry around another piece of hardware.

If you are simply looking for more storage (and lots of it), external hard drives are the way to go. If you are talking about storing music, photos, and documents, then take the external route. Also, the cost to amount of storage ratio is WAY lower for external hard drives than internal ones. If you do go the external hard drive route, I suggest you make sure you get the fastest transfer rate possible (if you have firewire ports, go with an external with firewire capability). Also, don't skimp out for a smaller drive (or you may find yourself in the same situation only with your external drive being full).

It comes down to this, know what you're going to do with the drive and choose what suits you best. Mobility and speed, or storage and cost.

Replace as in you want more space, not that it is broken? If it was broken then replacing it would be better.
For more space External is fine as long as you want to carry around the External drive everywhere you go. That might not be that big of deal if you just throw it in some pocket on your Laptop bag.

Working inside a laptop and particularly removing the hard drive/replacing it is expensive work, so I'd say an external HDD would be 'better'.

For a laptop, I'd suggest an external hard drive.

Hi Either way will work but the external drive is both easier to install and easier to move to anther computer.

Internal is much, much faster.
