I find it sad that there are so many people waiting and hoping for the world to end. Some people want to live in the end times to give their life meaning and purpose. Others hope something spectacular will happen just to relieve their day to day boredom.
I honestly don't know which person is worse. The one who makes up a 2012 hoax for profit or the person willing to believe it without a shred of proof.
It's with questions such as yours that remind us that intelligent and non-gullable persons with common sense like yourself still exist in the world.
We should keep in mind that the end of the world craze did not start with 2012 nor will it end there. The next fad has already begun with misunderstood notions that Apophis will strike Earth in 2036.
Of course, someone will come up with a bible code or a misinterpreted Nostadamus quatrain speaking of 2020 or something in the meantime.
It would be a lot easier if y/a would change their search bar so that people would actually use the damn thing so that we could educate and save more than one person at a time.

-ribuckey you may wish to study the topic more in depth. The 23rd was a miscalculation and is only supported by a small number of Mayanist researchers. December 23, the alternative date for the completion of the thirteenth b'ak'tun cycle in the Maya calendar, uses a version of the GMT-correlation based on a Julian Date Number of 584285 (a.k.a. the "Lounsbury correlation"). The correct and widely accepted JDN is 584283.

This is not true. I am trying to not make fun of your question but some people think that to. I think the world will end when it is God's timing. If you live on the coast of the atlantic ocean, you may just want to say that someday an island's volcano will erupt so badly that a tsunami will be caused because of a crack on one side of the island about 3 miles long will eventuly crack and a huge tsunami will go all the way through out the Atlantic ocean and the people living there will either die or be without a home so you and others may want to get with your parents or family members (if you are Married and have kids) may want to make a emergency kit , make sure you have clothes and plan an escape rout to another state when this happens. you may also want to take your family's medicine(if you have any) and pack it all up and start planning which inside state you may want to go to. Scientist are still not sure of it and just calm downthe world will still be here.

Some believe that Dec 21 2012 is NOT the end of the world, but the end of an era, and a new era will begin on Dec 22 2012.

Well wasn't the world supposed to end earlier this year? And the year before that? and so on?
I wouldn't laugh directly in people's faces but i certainly would enjoy mocking the idea. The worlds end is only known by God. AND the amount of things that have to happen before the world ends is A LOT! We only have the first eighth down so far.
Any way no I would not laugh at people just the ridiculouse theory.

I may laugh at how gullible some people are.
I may cry at how gullible some people are.
Edit: There were real problems coming up for 1 January 2000, but the people responsible got on them in time, fixed them, tested them, and everything worked more-or-less as it should have. I spent the evening of 31 December 1999 in the lab at school, monitoring several satellites and a bunch of computer systems.
The fact that very little happened is because the system worked, not because the usual group of morons over-reacted.

They fail too note that the Mayan calendar ends there on 12/21/2012. And not humanity. And yes, our solar system will be crossing the plane of the galaxy but it does so every few thousand years.
So will I laugh? I am already laughing at them. On 12/25/2012 I will be opening up Christmas gifts.

You know what? The day after that, one of two things will happen. The people who have been spouting this stuff all along will either just forget about it like they never said a thing, or they will "revise" their figures to some later date. Indeed, some have already started doing that in order to be among the first to hedge their bets and say, "See, I knew they were all wrong. It's my prediction that will come true." And on it goes.
What ticks me off is the fear this creates in children. I think the people who recklessly indulge in and promote this garbage are bullies. They're the type who would trample over a little child in order to get their faces in front of a television camera.

I'm laughing right now because 12/21/12 is 12, then 12 reversed, and then 12 again. I find it slightly ironic. Eh, that'll be 2 years after i gradute high school. At least I get time to enjoy all of my childhood.
Lol, 06/06/06. That was one of my b-days. I didn't know that it was a so called date for the end of the world.

It makes no sense at all. It's a stupid date. The calendar is something humans made up--humans think the entire world evolves around them. Do you think a freaking antelope is gonna care what day it is? Why don't we just shoot all those people that think the world is actually going to end? Don't want to disappoint them now, do we? Instead of worrying over when the world is going to end, we should be out doing something with our lives.
But I want my Christmas presents right now, just in case it does happen.
