Steaming is better then boiling. The best way to cook veggies is to microwave in a covered container, don't add water unless you have to and let them steam in there own juices. But if you can't do that steaming is the second way.

Steaming is much better than boiling (nutrients leach out into the water). Vitamin C is destroyed by the cooking process not just when steaming but pretty much all methods of cooking. I wouldn't worry too much about that as your baby can get Vitamin C from fresh fruits. Besides, raw vegetables are not suitable for a 1-yr-old.

I agree with Crystal H. I very rarely use my micorwave and when I do (maybe once a week for just a couple of minutes to reheat coffee) it's not in plastic. I've heard that the chemicals in plastic (especially containers that weren't made to be used multiple times like margarine and Cool Whip and take out containers) can cook into the food. That makes me question the nutritiousness (for lack of better word) of the new frozen veggies that steam in the bag in the microwave, or the plastic bag made for steaming veggies. I do not find it difficult to put the veggies in a steamer on top of a pot (with filtered water in it) and let them steam for 20-25 minutes.
As for giving unpurred veggies to a one-year-old, ask your pediatrician.

i bought a steamer at walmart for less than $30. at home bring water to a boil and drop the veggies in the water for about 1 minutes, is all I can think of. Steamed veggies are the best I agree!

Steamed is fine....
Steaming them RETAINS some of the vitamins as opposed to boiling them to death...
Just be sure that you serve them in a manner that does not cause choking...ground, chopped diced very small...depending on the texture.

They're soft enough for a one year old, and if steamed lightly, lose much less nutrition, they are a good choice for growing toddlers.

Yes it's OK. Steaming loses some nutrients, BUT it is way more nutritious than what Gerber makes and it's how you make baby food anyway. Just make sure your baby can handle the more adult foods and won't choke!
Don't microwave if you don't have to, microwaves change the genetic makeup of foods and make it harder to digest (ever wonder why we are told not to microwave breastmilk?)Babies don't need that.

Absolutely. Steamed or boiled, to soften them up, is totally fine. That's how they cook the baby food / jarrred ones!

Don't see why not. I always gave ours boiled ones, same as the grownups. By 12mo the kids generally ate what we were having - and we all sat down at the table together, too.

I would check with a doctor at some point. But it doesn't seem too bad though since they'll be soft enough for them to chew. Just make sure they don't take weird bites and choke on the soft bits.
