Well a thesis stement just basically states your position on the topic.
So you can just use something simple like
"I believe/feel that handguns should be banned"

You're introduction could be something like:

I believe that the distribution of handguns should be banned. Many reasons that support this are.......whatever ur reasons may be....

or it could be an example like this:

You turn on the news, and what do you hear? A story about another murder. A man shot a young girl, and killed her. This all happened because the local gun shop issued the man his own handgun. I personally believe that handguns should be banned.

This not only catches the readers attention, but clearly states your position on handguns. =)

next few paragraphs: list your reasons

Hope this helps!

If you are prepared to have your research disprove your thesis, (which is equally valid research, btw) you could submit that, "The banning of handguns in any given area, will directly correlate with a reduction in crime in that same area.."

My thought was, "how many handguns end up in the hands of children & their lives are shortened because of it, or how many children are killed by drive-by shootings." Our children are our future. What future will the world have, if our children die before they have a chance to make a difference?

"The one mistake they made in the US Constitution"

How's that? That ought to raise some eyebrows.
