They are not being taught that in school anymore sadly. I had to correct my son's teacher and then the Principal when his homework lesson in Govt. called us a Democracy. They were using Howard Zinn's book "A People's History of the United States"

There are A LOT of errors in this book concerning the United States

The United States of America is a democratic republic. We are both a democracy and a republic. We are a republic because we have people who represent our interests in the government, they could be appointed but in a democracy such as ours they are elected by the people. Pure democracy works with small groups, a village or town may find pure democracy beneficial but in any entity of over a few hundred will find it difficult if not impossible to govern as a pure democracy.
