It was introduced in 1912, but made famous in World War 1 as an answer to fortified troop locations, barbed wire, machine guns (also a relatively new invention), exc. It was slow and awkward, but impervious to small arms. Counter tactics and equipment were quickly invented, however, and tanks started fighting each other, along with mines and rifles specifically designed to shoot through their armor. Later, small explosive weapons (RPG, Panzerfaust, Bazooka) were created so to make it easier for an individual to take a tank down, and aircraft were modified to seek and destroy tanks.

The British invented it during WWI. It was a secret weapon, and they told the curious that they were working on water tanks...thus, tanks.
Before the advent of the tank in battle, trench warfare caused a stagnation of battlefields. This in turn caused the war to be an exercise in attrition- who can last the longest?
Tanks, because they were mobile over the battlefield obstacles, opened manuever again...although it was limited during WWI to a few miles, that was much better than the few hundred yards it had been. The Allies began to push the Germans back, leading to the armistice.

Psychologically, it had a tremendous impact on the people being attacked....namely the Germans during WWI. They used that as the impetus to develop the tank arm during the years prior to WWII. Achtung Panzer (by Guderian) described it's impact, ialong with the writings of Liddel Hart.
