Women are just built differently. Wider hips are better, as it gives the baby more room to squeeze out. That said, a smaller baby helps too : )
Pain threshold is also a factor, but so is mental preparation.
This is my advice:
1) Dont focus on the pain... now or at the hospital.
2) Breathe smoothly and deeply, as if youre doing yoga... or meditating.
Research has shown the Lamaze is not really beneficial and may even lead to medical intervention.
3) Squatting positions are best, since the baby doesnt fight against gravity. The labor is quicker and less painful.
Labor is rhythmic. Dont fight it. Contractions come land go like waves Breathe, think of yourself in the ocean surf, count down from ten.
I had one baby with a last minute epidural and one with NO DRUGS whatsoever. Surprisingly, natural is more enjoyable.

Like a hot poker twisting in your belly, and then came the epidural, ahhhhh.
Then it was just exhausting with the pushing. But again not pain because of the drugs.
Yes to the pain tolerance comments. Some are higher than others.
Every situation is different. My guess is that your mom was in labor a while ago and the medical procedures have improved since then.
You will do fine. The whole process does not last long and really you will forget within the first few weeks after the birth all of the specific details.
That is why people have more than 1.

It hurts, theres no two ways about it, but every one is different,
all 3 of my Labours were very different, All were natural,
My first lasted 21 hours, and was hell!!!!!!!
second time round 3 hours from start to finish and was an amazing experience, and my 3rd was really hard work much like my first 9 hours long and pure constant pain.
I think it depends on how relaxed you are, with my second i spent most of my labor in water and i would recommend it to every one, I was completely relaxed and the water supported me so i felt weightless, and at ease.
All of my labors were "back labor" which is meant to be worse, and it felt like my back was in a clamp and it was being tightened and tightened until it felt as through it was going to break.... But hay look at what you get at the end of it. Think that each contraction is a little bit closer to meeting your baby.
Good luck

I was in labor for a total of 36 hours, 18 hours of hard labor, I had an epidural. Actual birth hurts but my back labor and being poked 9 times with the epidural needle was the most painful. Once I had the epidural I was mostly numb. I think God gives you the gift of forgetting most of the pain because I'm pregnant again and ready to do it all again.

Everyone's labor pains are different. With my daughter, I was in a lot of pain, but I delivered her very quickly. My contractions were very intense. There is really no other kind of pain that I can compare contractions too. Maybe menstrual cramps times a thousand.
When I was pushing her out, it felt like *burning* to me. The pain was very intense after my water broke, but from that point the whole process took less than an hour.

I had my son without any meds and I did good and got through those 'horrible' contractions one at a time by just breathing.
I won't lie...Having a baby HURTS!!
But for me,as soon as it was over,I pretty much forgot all about the pain and I just wanted my baby.
The pain is good because it usually means PROGRESS!!
Just remember,it can only last so long and there IS light at the end of the tunnel.
I can't say it hurt so much that I'd never have another baby..I'm 11 weeks pregnant with #2!!
Good luck

A lot of it has to do with tolerance for the individual. A lot also has to do with the differences in practices now. Not that long ago Every women seeing a doctor was strapped on her back with her feet in the air unable to move or push properly. As things change and childbirth becomes more accepted as normal and not an illness people's experiences will be consistently better. There will always be horror stories, but they shouldn't be due to the pure ignorance of the people in charge anymore.

My mom said it felt like she threw her back out and it was spasming when she was in labor.
My sis said she hardly felt anything but pressure and her daughter was born in 5 hours.
My best friend she said it hurt, but she would do it 6 times over to complete her family.
I even heard this lady on "a baby story" say that when the baby was passing through her vagina, it actually felt good and it was a relief.
All of these women had natural deliveries, with no epidural.
I've heard that your first delivery is usually like your mother's first delivery. My mom's and sister's firsts were pretty fast, so hopefully my first is fast too!

it really depend on how you deal with pain, my sister was crying on her first contraction but she has never been good with pain. My labour was 2 days with very mild pain which did not hurt but did annoy me. They got stronger and felt like strong period pains that would come and go. I only started screaming when it was time to push and that does hurt. i had half a shot of pethidine 5 hrs before giving birth and was too busy screaming to use gas and air. but once you are pushing the pain seems to go away as your mind is focused on pushing. i would not say it was the worst pain ever but it did hurt.
