I am having a legislative meeting at my office and the american flag and state flag are being displayed on a table. What is the display protacol? Should the american flag be displayed to the right of the state flag or visa versa?

It is displayed to it's own right.

If displaying two flags, the US flag should be to the right. If displaying three, it should be in the middle.

If displaying it with "inferior" flags, it should be higher, if with equal flags then at the same level. (An "inferior" flag is a flag of anything other than another nation - e.g. a State or city flag, or a unit flag)

Normally, when I see flags the American flag is in the middle of 2 other flags and higher up. In Michigan, the American flag is higher up and to the left of the state flag. That may just be the place though.

it can be a little confusing to some people - and indeed myself before i understood it properly - the difference between 'right' and 'its own right'

'its own right' is if you imagine yourself to be standing leaning against the US flagpole- facing the audience - there is to be no other flag to you right- therfore you are on your own right and all the other flags are to your left

now walk away from the flag pole and take a seat on the front row of the audience--
as you look at the flags the US flag will appear on the left and the state flag on the right

on your table sit behind it and place the US flag on the right side of the state flag- then you will have the correct display
