The 25th Amendment allows for the appointment of a replacement until an election can be held. If both the President and Vice President are unable to perform their duties than the Speaker of the House becomes the President. Don't worry Pelosi won't become President she doesn't want to go through impeaching both Bush and Cheney and that is what it would take. We are already wasting money in Iraq why waste more when there are still enough Republicans in Congress to block any attempt to convict anyway?

The real job of the VP is as president of the Senate. But in modern times, VPs spend very little time doing that. When not there, he is replaced by the President Pro Tempore (in this case Senator Byrd from West Virgina).

If the VP is permanently disabled, the President is allowed to nominate a successor, who must then be confirmed by the Senate.

Nancy Pelosi can't replace him because she is in the House of Representatives, not the Senate.

Bush appoints a replacement.

Atrial fibrillation can be serious, if left untreated, but Cheney is not in that position. According to the radio news, they're talking about a cardioversion (sending a shock through the heart to reset the rhythm)which is not major surgery. It's no more invasive than any other cath lab procedure. Most people are in and out overnight, at the most.

Right now, his doctors are just being cautious.

In the Presidential line of succcession the Speaker of the House is next in line. But I believe that as long as the President is still okay, that he would appoint his own VP.

They would name a successor. Pelosi is #3 on the list, so she only matters if Bush and Cheney go at once. My guess is that Robert Novak would be the guy.

Comrade Pelosi takes over the "VP ROLE" temporarily until President Bush can appoint someone else to give the left heartburn.

Bush needs to name a new VP - there is no automatic promotion unless the President is killed - then Pelosi would become President.
