you have to want to help people. without it you would quit minutes after you begin. it is not an easy field but it can be very rewarding. it is good when you are able to help the kids and their families.

I've only done voluntary work, so it's not my profession (I'm still studying). But I felt like I HAD to. I saw such a desperate need in the community, and so little being done, and yet it was so easy to make a difference, just by helping one kid at a time. If I do nothing, I feel like I'm not fulfilling my potential. I never feel like I'm special for doing it; I always feel like it's not enough. And there is always someone more dedicated than I am. But even so, I find it really rewarding. I form relationships with the kids I'm working with (the organisation I volunteered with looks after inner-city kids, helps them with homework and teaches them life skills), and both sides learn a lot.

My desire to help people. To make a difference. It didn't last long. The burnout was unbelievable.
