The first thing you're going to need is an axe. Unless you have the right kind of tool, the game won't even give you the option to cut hardwood or sandalwood (though a lot of times it just calls it 'wood' still). You'll need a metal axe for the sandalwood at least.

Once you have that squared away, you'll find lots of sandalwood trees near the hot springs on the third island. There are both hardwood and sandalwood trees in the volcano jungle. Teak is one hardwood. There are both kinds of trees in various other places too.
