lots of people enjoy mathematics.

I think more people would enjoy it if they actually knew what the subject was about. Unfortunately, most school mathematics focuses on mechanical skills like factoring, simplifying roots, manipulating trig identities, etc. I tell people that all subjects have a certain amount of "skill" building to get thought before you get to the creative stuff.

music.....scales and fingering drills
foreign literature.....practicing those irregular verbs
history....you DO need to memorize some facts

with mathematics, the time invested in such preparatory activites is a lot longer. But just as you wouldn't want to prejudge your potential interest level in French literature based on how tedious you find the language drills to be, a person shouldn't judge mathematics by their experience factoring quadratic expressions.

simply because math is not their interest.
