Essay: The Constitution was an attempt to address problems of decentralization that were experienced under the Articles of Confederation.

Discuss three problems of decentralization that occurred under the Articles of Confederation. For each problem you listed, identify one solution that the Constitution provided to address the problem.

Some have argued the tension between decentralized power and centralized power continues to exist. Support this argument by explaining how one of the following demonstrates the continued tension.

Environmental policy

Gun control

Disability access

Hint: decentralization refers to the federal government giving some power to the states.

Well, you essay is going to look like this:
Introduction
Section 1: First Problem of Decentralization
Section 2: Second Problem of Decentralization
Section 3: Third Problem of Decentralization
Section 4: Continued Tension
Conclusion.

So you need to do some research on early America under the Articles of Confederation, and find three specific problems that the states or the people encountered. Each of those problems, I assure you, the Constitution addressed, by either the distribution of federal vs. state powers, the 9th or 10th amendment, or Articles 1, 2, and 3 of the Constitution.

There are hundreds of issues today where decentralization still plays an important role. If it were me, I'd write about drug policy. Several states have drug laws that conflict with federal laws...California has allowed medical marijuana but the federal government continues to arrest medical patients using marijuana. The issues are still alive and well.

I will tell you this... when those issues are dealt with by states rather than by a central government, conflicts arise when different states have different policies. Hopefully, that will get you started.
