Great M42 16V short engine. Easy to work on, cheap to maintain. Engine loves to be revved to 6000rpm. GOOD ON GAS.
Not really powerful (a Civic today can outrun you), but a great daily driver, and great handling. But check for strut tower stress cracks or mushrooming usually associated with high mileage E36/E46.
Access to the belts, thermostat, hoses...etc are extremely easy with the engine being "short". Everything is right in front of you when you stand in front of the car! Much easier than a modern FWD car with a transverse engine layout.
It's a good car to get when you are learning to maintain your first BMW.

If I were you I would get the BMW M3 just because its much nicer and more refined than a 335i. I was 17 when i got my 2006 bmw m3 and its the type of car your never gonna forget. Too bad e92 m3 wernt out yet at that time otherwise I woulda of gotten one instead of e46. Yeah anyways get a coupe e92 m3 semi-loaded should cost around low 60,000's + tax if you can afford it. Otherwise you can go 335i which isnt bad either. All depends what you want on a car. 416 horsepower is definately too much for you but you'll get used to it eventually like I did haha. Just make sure you dont hit that sport mode button until you get used to that throttle response. Dont get discourage what people say, just drive safely and have fun doing so ;) hope this helps - 335i is NOT NA engine as said above

Regardless of miles, you should be most concerned with evidence of it's past matinence history. If the previous owners treated it with a "money no object approach" certainly go for it! This is of course assuming you are in a position of doing the same. I can tell you from first hand experience as I own a 2001 325Ci Coupe that these cars are more than capable of surpassing the 250,000 mile mark as far as the engine is concerned. Mine just had it's 100,000 mile birthday last week, and so far everything's been great. They are very reliable cars all in all, but once something does decide to go on you (typically between 80,000 - 120,000 miles) it'll cost a pretty penny. Also, beware of the auto transmissions, they come equipt with "lifetime fluids" and (although replaced under warranty thank god) mine just crapped out on me at 93,000 miles. The would be cost through dealership? $6,000.00+

I have a 1.8 sedan, and I tell you that it does lack much power. However, it does make up for handling in the corners. This car is my first bmw and I've fallen in love with it. But you'll always be a little disappointed by the lack of power it has. Definitely try to get the 2.5 liter engine if you could.

IT's not the quickest thing, but with 140bhp out of a revvy engine, Rear wheel drive and the usual BMW handling it's fun to drive.

buy it if the price is right and make shore you can afford the repairs if needed because lots of shops will try to BS you on repair costs just because its a BMW. these cars don't have much power but they are good on gas but that's probably the reason your buying this car right.

pretty cool, the motor lacks alot of gusto though
if you can find any 325i. something with the 2.5 inline 6 cylinder, your golden
that motor has been around for years and years and parts are getting cheaper.
ive owned probably a dozen different beemers with 2.5 l motors in them including m3's

1.8 is pretty small. No power to speak of. How much are you wanting to spend?
