to report to their local INS office and get their green cards?

Righto. They broke the law.

By the same reasoning, we've locked up thousands of people for possession of small quantities of marijuana.

Why is that bad?

Because it's against the law.

Why's it against the law?

Because it's bad.

And besides, what else are we going to do with all these prisons?

I've got an idea! Let's pass a law against being totally dense! That'll keep those prisons filled!

If we don't continue to uphold all of our counterproductive, useless, unenforceable and inhumane laws, we're going to get a reputation for being soft?

Soft where?

Did I say we should keep letting them in? No. But I don't see the point of kicking in their doors and tearing them away from their US citizen children--not if they're law-abiding and are working.

Here is the deal. There are about 12 million of these folks here. Anyone really thnk we are going to round them up and send them home? Go by any NFL stadium after the game and look at how difficult it is to handle 60,000 people. Now do the math. Who is going to pay to hire the buses to transport them, to build or rent the facilities to house them while awaiting due process, to hire the people to procfess all the paperwork...etc etc. This is a bunch of $$$$

I'm not saying it is right, but I just don't see any way but putting some sort of amnesty in place. Let's get em legal, get em on the tax rolls and move forward! Passing laws that 'make' people criminals does nothing but fill our jails.

America can not just pick and choose which laws it decides to enforce. Granted, that is exactly what happens in some situations, but that does not make it the right thing. If we just wave all the good ones in, it will send a message that America is soft, and you can get your green card simply by coming over here illegally. If that happens, we would have an even greater influx of illegals coming across our boarders. Causing an even greater problem. It is also not fair to the good people waiting to come here legally.

Precisely because they are illegal, and need to go through the proper office in their home country. They committed a felony just by entering the U.S. illegally. They don't deserve what they've got.

EDIT:

They may be law abiding now that they are living here, and they may have U.S. Citizen children (which they shouldn't, because they shouldn't even be in this country) which they are separated from. Too bad. Maybe next time they will learn and go through the the proper channels. why do you think that the housing market is going down the toilet? Its because of all these illegal immigrants, who came into this country wanting what they could not afford, and now they are getting kicked out of their houses on their behinds, as it should be. Ask an LEGAL immigrant if they believe that these illegal immigrants should get a free pass into the country when they had to wait months, maybe even years to even VISIT the country for a few years.

Also, if we do allow them to get their green cards after coming into the country illegally, that is just like opening the floodgates! It will show more people that "why should we bother paying a passport, when we can go illegally into the U.S.A. and get to stay for LIFE FOR FREE!? If you ever want illegal immigration to ruin this country, adopting the solution which you outlined is exactly the way to go about it. If they want to come to this country, let them go through the proper channels.

Because the fact is they are in this country illegaly, which makes them criminals! In addition is just isn't fair to all the legal immigrants who actually went through it all to become citizens of this country! Actually it would be insulting to them. All the illegal aliens should either go home on their own or be deported. There should be a 10 year moritorium placed on anyone who has entered the country illegally. All illegals and their ENTIRE families should be deported! NO ANCHOR BABIES!

Chris H

We're not talking about passing laws that Make people criminals! We're speaking of laws already on the books to deal with the criminal illegal alien. Just the fact that they are here illegally makes them criminals. They broke our laws to get here!

Nobody is saying that they all should be rounded up and kept in the same place and then a caravan of busses used to transport them! There should be a concerted effert made to find every one of them. When found they should be deported. The cost of this would be considerably less than the cost of welfare, schooling, housing, medical, and damage done by this criminal element.

if it were only a fair solution. by fairness, you have to ask yourself is your solution fair for all of the citizens who paid their application fees, and who 'legally' earned their way into our country. i don't believe illegal immigrants need be granted a free pass because they just haven't been caught yet. illegal is simply that--illegal.

i could possibly see a similar solution to the one you have proposed that allow for a temporary 12 mo. work visa for illegal immigrants who come forward and pay a fine. ~$10,000/family. (2 adults and children under 18 born in the U.S.A.) ~$5,000/person. (financing available) in addition, they must also prove that they are not a criminal in their home country, and that they have not committed any crimes in our country. (including parking tickets) if they continue to remain employed full time for the 12 mos. then they can apply for citizenship and complete the process from there.

Why don 't you ask those immigrants that are actually following the current immigration law by applying from their country of origin if they'd like to do that, instead?
Seems a lot more appropriate.
