No. I was born and raised in the USA and the fat to skinny ratio wasn't any different than what I see here. (Not exactly true; in Northeast England there seems to be more heavy-weighed people than where I come from in Texas.)
Americans come in all sizes just like everywhere else.
And, if you lived several miles from the nearest shop, would you walk or take a car? Where I come from the corner shop wasn't just around the corner. We had plenty of room to spread out--my typical average home in Texas would cost over £800,000 here just because of the amount of land it sat on. You just can't compare it.
Anyway, based upon my personal experience, I cannot honestly condone the belief most Americans are fat. And I know a whole lot of Americans.

There were a lot who were when Ive been. Probably a little higher percentage than in the UK. And they use cars when they could actually walk. I walked all over the place, and got looked at like I was a freak!! But there are also a higher percentage who are freakishly superfit skinny. I think too much emphasis is placed on appearances, moreso in the US than in the UK,

It is hard to walk places when you live 12 miles away from anything. Most people are not really fat, just a little fat. Some people are really fat though. We walk for fun out in our neighborhood but that's it.

What you heard is stereotypes that are loosely based in fact. Yes, many of us are lazy and drive rather than walk to get just about anywhere. However, there are also many of us who do walk to get places. I drive to work because I live about 45 miles away from work, but when I lived in Kansas, I only drove when it was too cold to walk or I was going out of town.

No, that's not true. There are many overweight people in the U.S., but there are many very fit people too. People use cars a lot, but that's because people need to get places fast.

Surveys say so. Then you get the other end of it the rest are as thin as beanpoles. England is catching up with them on both counts

I've seen a few big 'uns! Usually in flowery shirts and shorts with a camera around their neck and an ice cream in their hand.

"Most" is a stretch, but I've also read that the entire world population has a weight issue.
