Fashion is like art because it is a way for people to express themselves. Designers express themselves with their individual designs (a good example is Betsy Johnson). Individual wearers also use it to express themselves (like Gwen Stephanie, Goth kids, Punk rockers). You can expand on things like Converse Chuck Taylors (having gone from a basketball shoe to fashion accessory), Hip Hop generation (Baggy pants, ice).

What I would offer is I believe fashion is a form of art and a the human body is the canvas. The come is different shapes, sizes, and colors and it is a fashion designers job to fit the fashion to the body or the art to the canvas. Maybe you can build on that and provide examples.

yes, totally and absolutely, the design of fashion is art, fashion design. there are entire books devoted to fashion from different periods. textiles are also art. you can certainly get caught up in some of the details - is it just the fashion from the high-class fashion shows, and not everyday clothing? is it just hand-made clothing, like, say, the fabrics of Indonesia? i am not sure that everyone agrees on this one or even that the art world or the fashion world has agreed upon it. i would go with whatever your opinion is and find articles and books to support it - i'm sure there is stuff out there for both sides of the argument.

For me fashion has always been an expression of at. It reflects mood, and personality for many. And fashion like art is subjective. You will do great on your assignment because fashion is like walking, moving art. Good luck
