This term was loosely used up to couple of years ago with so many countries, especially Latin American ones. Reason term is no longer used so much could be because we are a Banana Republic ourselves now?

Most of this term is applied to the South America countries that grew and exported banana crops for economic reasons. The Republic name was an honorary expression for their form of government. And no the U.S. isn't a banana country, it is a self sustaining country.

The "banana" part refers to the fact that many countries in Central and South America fell into this category, defined by military juntas taking over or preempting popular elections. It's hardly accurate to refer to the U.S. as such.
