YES ,it's just as offensive when they refer to a dark skinned black people by blackie or dark chocolate. IF you're black your black no matter what shade. black comes in more than one shade. HOW ABOUT JUST CALLING US ALL "PEOPLE" instead of identifying us by color ,what does it matter anyway.

Yeah I find it very offensive, one should never be called by their skin color. Skin color is something people can't change. A friend of mine once called my son "yellow" and I was very hurt. There is a large misconception in the Black community that lighter Blacks have it easy. However, this is not true, where do we stand? We are too light for (some darker) Blacks and too dark for ( the racist) Whites. We are just here. If it wasn't for God, I'm not sure how I would have overcome the years for being called "White Ni**a", "Wanna Be" "High Yellow" and "Banana".

While, younger people may not be offended by these terms it is offensive to those who know the origin of the terms. They were established to categorized people within a number races where skin color varies. If you never had to take the brown paper bag test, named as being the master's illegitimate offspring, called a field or house N....., or half breed, you would not know. Just because you are not offended does not mean these derogatory terms are not offensive. There is a long standing insult behind them.

It goes both ways, though, people say things to dark skinned folks, too. Really, what we need to do is stop focusing so much on each others skin tone and start working together to get our community back in order! Yeah, calling someone those things can be very offensive, especially when said with malicious intent, but we need to get past all of that as a people!

My family and I don't worry about things like that and our complexions are so light you can pass for white to a medium brown. My complexion is right in the middle of Jada Pinkett & Gabrielle Union. Like I said we don't worry about those types of things and I have never heard anyone in my family or friends use those terms on us or anyone else. I have heard them spoken by characters in movies & by ppl in the street to others but by no one in my circle. But if it offends you then you need to speak up and say something.
BTW
You must really be dealing w/ some serious issues regarding your race/complexion because I have been on here (YA!) for a while and whenever I see your questions they always pertain to race/complexion. I hope you are getting the answers you need to work out your issues.

It's just a reference to the color of your skin (which is unimportant anyway). I don't think it is a personal insult to you as a person. You are beautiful no matter what skin tone you have whether it be the darkest black or very pale black or any other color. Be proud and just say it doesn't matter if I am mix with something; I was born with it! It's what makes me who I am and what makes me beautiful.

I don't think it's offensive but I do think that it's rather pathetic that everyone's so caught up on skin-color.
Some people just go out of their way to slap people into groups. It's all so petty.

i guess that's something between black people. i have heard many black people who gradate the different skin tones like that, it seemed like it was ok with a lot of them; i'm glad to hear it is not ok with you, because to me it is just an expansion of a value judgment based on the color of one's skin.

It's only offensive to the person who is offended. I personally have never been offended by it. I've been called Redbone forever. It just means light brown with reddish undertones. Many Native Americans have this skin tone.

If it offends you, then yeah it's... offensive. Some light-skinned people don't care though...
