Im guessing example.com is replacing your real domain? Very good. Thats what its for. And 127.0.0.1 isnt the real IP you are using? (I sure hope not :)

Does irc.example.com actually convert to 127.0.0.1? If I checked from here is that the response I would get? An entry has to be made to the zone file for example.com on its dns server.

You can get away with sloppy directions on some things. You can put anything.example.com into most browsers and it will send you to example.com but many IRC programs are picky and if it doesnt get back an actual IP then it wont just guess

Are you literally using irc.EXAMPLE.com? If you are, that's not going to work. You don't own example.com, so it's not going to send users to your IP address.

If you aren't literally using irc.EXAMPLE.com, then the problem could be that you are behind a firewall or a NAT router. You'll have to open the port 6667 or use port forwarding to send traffic on port 6667 to your server.

Have you tried having people connect using your external IP address instead of the domain name?
