When changing to low gear and back again on automatic transmission cars, is it okay to keep the foot on the gas pedal or should it be removed during the change? Is either way okay?

Normally with an automatic transmission you should leave the vehicle in D or over-drive unless conditions make it absolutely necessary to manually shift (i.e. towing, offroading). When manually shifting you should let off the accelerator to shift, as it will cause a harsh shift into the next higher gear if you have power applied when you move the gear-shift selector to the next highest gear. The same will happen when downshifting, but when downshifting excess speed and too much acceleration can cause the wheels to lock up and you can lose control of the vehicle.

automatic means the car will do it automatically. decelleration and acceleration will trigger a response as will hills.
