I've tried it a few times, but all I get is bits and pieces of yarn. Never one solid piece. Is there a special technique? A certain way to do it? aren't there any websites with directions?

this may help a little bit i really cannot remember which episode it was that showed how to take things apart . you really need to look at how its sewn together if it is, and then take the stitching out. then you have to make sure that it wasnt a cut from a larger piece of material. then you just have to determine where you want to unravel from. you may need to cut one row fron the top or bottom depending on if it was knit from bottom up or top down and just start frogging, see if it works. if you dont want the sweater. just go ahaed and try it.

generally, you can't frog a store bought sweater because they are machine knit and then cut into pieces and sewn together. The long yarn used for handknits doesn't exist in a store bought sweater. sorry. Try Value village and look for a sweater that looks hand knit.

Do you mean felting? If the sweater is not wool, you just need to buy some wool roving and poke it into the sweater. Spread it out in an even layer and felt it in the usual manner.
