In the early 1970s, Clive Campbell, a Jamaican born DJ who went by the name "Kool Herc," arrived in New York City. Herc introduced the Jamaican tradition of toasting, or boasting impromptu poetry and sayings over Reggae, Disco and Funk records, during parties and parks in the Bronx, New York. Herc and other DJs would cut into the power lines at basketball courts to plug up their equipment and play outside for the people. Herc also was the originator of break-beat deejaying, where the breaks of funk songs—being the most danceable part, often featuring percussion—were isolated and repeated for the purpose of all-night dance parties. Later Djs such as Grandmaster Flash refined and developed the use of breakbeats, including cutting.[2]
Herc's idea was soon widely copied, and by the late 70s a myriad of DJs were releasing 12" records where they would rap to the beat. Popular tunes included Kurtis Blow's "The Breaks", and The Sugar Hill Gang's "Rapper's Delight."

hip hop is the proper term this genre is called. rap music is that new commercial thing that is showing negative images of black people. hip hop started in the south bronx in the mid 70"s using a mixture of jamaican dancehall talking over a sample beat and americanism way of bragging about everything possible. it has came a long way if you was to compare hip hop vs. rap

"It began in 1976 or ‘77 when disco was real popular. The first disc jockeys (DJs) would grab the mike while people were ‘partying’ and say something like, ‘clap your hands,’ or ‘you all ready to party?’ The crowd would respond to that. Then it evolved. The DJ wouldn’t have to do that because the DJ would bring a guy with him to do that - to motivate the crowd while the DJ deejayed. That got into a lot of the disco clubs and a lot of people weren’t going for it. The MC blabbing and running his mouth all night; the DJ scratching and cutting. Most of the people going into the disco wanted to dance and have a party. They didn’t really want to raise no hell.

Probably best to answer like this.
Hip-Hop can be many things to many different people - I believe Hip-Hop is a way of life expressing elements of urban communty
Hip Hop is an art form that includes deejaying [cuttin' & scartchin'] emceeing/rappin'. breakdancing and grafitti art. These art forms as we know them today originated in the South Bronx section of New York City around the mid 1970s. Hip Hop has thrived within the subculture of Black and Puerto Rican communities in New York and is now just recently beginning to enjoy widespread exposure. From a sociological perspective, Hip Hop has been one of the main contributing factors that helped curtail gang violence due to the fact that many adults found it preferrable to channel their anger and aggressions into these art forms which eventually became the ultimate expression of one's self.
