Edler is in the race. He has youth on his side (21), size (6-3, 220), moves the puck well, plays the body well, is a plus defenceman, etc
He is not the greatest skater, and he has quite a few giveaways (sounds like Patrick Kane!).
However, Kane, Toews, Gagner, and Cogliano (all from the Western Conference by the way) are between him and the trophy! I'd put Carey Price of Momtreal, Niklas Backstrom of Washington, and Phoenix' Peter Mueller in front of him too. But, he should make the all-rookie team!

Calder Trophy is most likely going to either Toews or Kane.
One possibility to look for, although not likely, is Kris Letang for Pittsburgh. This kid drew high praise from Paul Coffey when he saw him in person. He's now out there on their first PP unit with Gonchar. Should be one of the top offensive defensemen in the league in the next few years

Huh???? Edler??? Have you ever heard of Toews or Kane from the Hawks (western conference) They have 16 and 22 points respectively. Andrew Cogliano of the Oilers is way ahead of him too with 14 points.
I do agree though that Edler is a good player but with 6 points at this time he is behind a few others in Calder cup votes.

Jake what are you talking about? One game and you want to hand out an award? Easy there. He's still not as good as Price or Backstrom.
As far as Edler goes, we can talk about him, but unless the sports writers mention him, he won't even make the final three nominees. There are a lot of good young players this year, I believe because teams are finding it makes more economic sense to use young guys as opposed to over-priced veterans. As a result, we may one day find it rare that a guy plays 20 years in the league.
All of this supports my earlier theories about changing the rookie award to a top rookie defenseman (Bobby Orr award) and a top rookie forward (Wayne Gretzky award) and making the Calder top rookie scorer. I'd also like to create a Gordie Howe award for any player who plays 20 seasons.

hey, I'm a Canucks fan and a Vancouver resident but Edler over Kane or Toews at this point or even Carey Price and Erik Johnson?
Doubtful.
Did you see the game last night (Canucks/Hawks)? Kane's unbelievably good and plays in a major market.

Edler is a pretty good defenseman but there are alot of players that are just better than him at this stage. Namely Toews and Kane from Chicago and Backstrom from the Capitals.

Who????Never head of him - must play after I go to bed...
Seriously, I agree he is good, off to a good start and seems to play solid D. That being said I don't think he as much chance for rookie of the year. Just look at the Hawks dynamic duo.

I say Tuuka Rask will win the Calder Cup. Even though he has only played 1 game in the NHL. He only allowed 2 goals in his debut. If the Bruins bring him up for more games, i think he will be spectacular in net and will be the Clay Buchholz of the NHL.
