When examining someone's tummy, it should have a similar softness everywhere, with no lumps, bumps, or hard spots; and there shouldn't be any places where there is pain when pushing on it.

If there are hard spots, lumps, or areas with pain, the doctor needs to next determine if any of these things are caused by something that poses a risk or needs treatment. The doc might then ask questions about other symptoms you might have (like stomach ache, nausea, cramps, etc.) which the doctor needs to make a diagnosis of the problem.

Most of the time, doctors don't discover anything by doing this, but its always good to check because the tummy exam can catch problems long before a patient actually notices them, and most problems are easier to treat if they are discovered early.

Most likely they are feeling for your ovaries and checking for abnormalities... also sensitivity and tenderness may alert them to blockages in your intestines, abdominal cyst, etc...
