Germany had just recovered from losing the first world war. Plus they were impacted by the depression in the 1930s as well. Adolf Hitler was a soldier in WWI and he vowed to avenge what had happened to his country. President Woodrow Wilson (the only president to hold a PHD) said in 1918 "If ammends are not made with Germany, a second world war would be inevitable within the next generation" And he was right. After WWI every country raped Germany of their wealth and resources. All of this led to the rise of the Nazi party. The German people believed the Nazis because they felt that they could make Germany a great country again.
After WWII we learned to help Germany and Japan get back on their feet and look at where these countries are today as far as technology and wealth.

In my view it was not propaganda, but the fact of hyper inflation caused by the Depression and the economic mismanagement of the Weimar Republic. This led to starvation and riots with the Nazis on one side and the Communists on the other. Then, propaganda comes into the equation - the Nazis managed to persuade the people that they would deal with problems better (laying a lot of the blame for Germany's problems on the Versailles Treaty and International Jewry). The Nazis gained a minority government in open elections, and thereafter is was downhill all the way.

ooh, good question. I'm currently studying this for my GCSE's :D
A lot of it was due to Hitler himself. He may not seem it but he was very charismatic and excelled in public speaking in general which made people want to vote for him. Women of the time have actually even being reported as finding him rather 'sexy.' He made speeches that got people worked up in support of him. He made the voters remember him by the way he talked and used his hands.
Another reason is that there was a lot of unrest in Germany at the time. German citizens felt very cheated by the treaty of Versailles which had basically destroyed their economy (paying the reparations to France) made their army into a joke, (no air force or submarines, reduced numbers of troops) and in essence, made them take blame for starting the whole war in the first place. This laid foundations for the 'stab in the back' myth which stated that the Wiemar republic had royally screwed over the German people.
Hitler and the National Socialist's (Nazi's) promises made them look very appealing to the angry masses. They promised things such as good penions for the elderly and a good education system. This seemingly ensured that despite their rather scary displays of anti-sematism (their hatred of the Jews) and their desire to create a master race that fit to their own specifications, they were the best options at a time of great political unrest.
Hindsight is a wonderful thing, and I'm sure they wouldn't have elected the Nazi's had they known what would come of it, however at the time it seemed that Hitler was offering them an escape ladder from the cycle of poverty and depression caused by the treaty of Versailles, and helped along by the Wall street crash in 1929.
I hope this helps you :D and that I haven't bored you too much with my waffle :)

The Treaty of Versailles imposed impossible strictures on the German economy and the hyperinflation of the Weimar Republic destroyed confidence in democratic institutions. The Nazis shifted the blame for the bad conditions from the Germans' own behavior in WWI and even the Versailles treaty to minority groups. Also, Hitler and the Nazis promised to restore German prosperity and honor by rebuilding the military ( done despite prohibitions against this by the V treaty ). Von Hindenburg was getting senile and gave Hitler the opportunity to take over the political system by appointing him Chancellor.
Also, Hitler was a very charismatic speaker and, strange to say, women found him particularly "sexy" and contributed to his popularity.

1) Jozsef Goebbels was the propaganda man. He got in many posters, speeches and other materials of propaganda to increase the amount of support
2)The people of Germany, esp. the working and middle class were afraid of the bad situation of hyperinflation and so they loathed the socialists for the amount of work they had put in which was quite minimal and supported the extremists. ie. Nazis and Communists
3) The SA (Sturm Abtheilung) or the storm troopers commonly known as the brown shirts beat people up, broke up meetings and mistreated the opponents they had. Moreover their creation of the swastika shaped formation lead many people to think that this was pretty good!
4) Nazis had the support of many rich industrialists eg. Thyssen Fauben etc. some of which who even owned papers to promote Naziism. The Volkischer Beobachter was the most famous out of all.
5) The treaty of versailles was loathed and this caused a lot of people to support Hitler who travelled to different parts of the country to gain mass support through his magnetic personality
6) The PR (Proportional Representation) system of the parliament Reichstag created very small bands of party votes which lead to co-alition. Following the support hitler gained, his soon became one of the majorities. In March 1933 they had 281 votes when the started off with just 12 in 1929
Hope this helps. Its all from the top of my head but factually its right.

There were many reasons - worldwide economic downturn that led to massive inflation was one of the major reasons. This led to the rise of Facism in Germany and other somewhat similar political beliefs, such as Communism and Nationalism. Try Wikipedia and nose around in some on the topics around WWII, facism, and Nazis.
