I once heard a preacher define sin as trying to accomplish a good thing in a bad way. There's nothing wrong with wanting to look cool, experience the freedom of the road, or get 55 miles to the gallon riding to work. The wrong part lies in the means some people try to accomplish it, by putting themselves at unnecessary risk.
Legally, in some states, you can take a written test and an eye test, then go buy a bike with enough horsepower for a reasonably fast sports car and ride it out of the dealership without wearing a helmet. This is what I would consider the wrong way to learn to ride a motorcycle.
Here is my idea of the best way to learn how to ride. I did not completely adhere to this best way myself - and I started riding at 28; you are not too old. First, take a riding class where you'll spend a weekend riding a small bike in a safe environment. You'll learn a lot of the basics of motorcycling this way. The office that issues your driver's license will have a list of approved riding classes.
Then go to a motorcycle shop and get a full suit of safety gear. Road rash is not sexy. I'd recommend the whole outfit - helmet, boots, gloves, jacket, and pants. You'll want to make sure the jacket and pants are armored (that is, they have heavy padding in the knees, elbows, shoulders, and back) and at least the jacket has vents so you can wear it in hot weather.
And get a good first bike and start practicing your riding skills, in parking lots and side streets at first. Once you build up your skills, you can venture out into more traffic and work your way up to things like the Interstate or night riding.
I've got four rules about what makes a good first bike: It should have no more than about 50 hp, it should be light enough that you could pick it up if it fell over, you should be able to get both feet firmly in contact with the ground when on the saddle, and it should just feel like the right bike. This will help ensure you're getting a bike that's safe and appropriate for learning on. Remember, this will be your first bike, not your last.

No, there's nothing wrong with learning to ride a motorcycle, no matter what your age!
I too started riding my own motorcycle at age 30 and I'm now nearing 55. My dream of riding cross country have yet to be fulfilled, but when I retire from Gramma daycare duty, I will take 3-6 weeks and head west!
I used to teach the motorcycle safety course, and many of the best students were not that young. Many, if not most of them were over 30. Many who took, and passed, the course never went any further; as they were only interested in the process in case of an emergency since they were primarily riding as passengers. Even those who didn't continue in motorcycling did say that they were better drivers for having their awareness of bikes on the road increased.
So to answer your initial question, you are never too old to go after your dreams. And yes, there is most certainly something sexy about a woman who commands her own destiny and who rides her own motorcycle.
Go for the nearest available motorcycle safety program, even if if is not a state run program. Just be certain that the instructors are certified by a credible source, as not all are. Then be sure you feel they are not of the misogynist mindset, as there are aplenty of them out there!
You can go to the MRF.org web site and then click on the state you reside in to find your local motorcyclist rights organization and most of them have a link to safety programs.
Join a rights organization and attend some meetings to meet like-minded women and men who have the passion to live their dreams by fighting for their right to ride. I've never been sorry I joined ABATE, the MRF, the AMA, and started a chapter of Women on Wheels.
Check them out and live your dreams!!

Not at all. Your friends are correct that riding can be dangerous. It's a risk you take, but you take risks everyday! The fact that your 30 and female means nothing. I like that you say you want to learn to ride. Most noobs just say "Hey, I'm 16 years old and I want a Hayabusa, is this a good first bike? I think I'll be fine cuz I can do bunny hops on my BMX bike." Take an MSF course, buy yourself all the safety equipment, and a nice used bike. Then you can decide if it's for you or not. Good Luck and when you start, Ride Safe!

I am about the same age as you. You aren't too old to learn. Just take the MSF course and get some good gear. Some good boots, jacket and a full face helmet can make a big difference if you meet pavement.
As for the sexy thing. Men love a woman that can ride. See how many heads you turn when you walk into a restaurant or bar with your helmet under your arm.

Nothing at all. Riding isn't meant to be sexy though. It can be much more dangerous than driving a car. You don't get many second chances. Find a training program and go from there. At very least do it the right way. By the way, I'm 56 and riding almost everyday. Enjoy it!

I learned to ride my motorcycle at age 30. Like others already said, take a safety course. Also get a good starter bike. You said you already have friends who ride. Have them go with you to help pick out a bike that suits you.

I took the basic Motorcycle Safety Foundation course this weekend....it was fun. Take this course first to see if you would like to ride. They provide the motorcycle and the course is designed for people that have NEVER operated a motorcycle before and covers the basics of SAFE operation. HAVE FUN and check it out for yourself. There are lots of women riders, and women only riding clubs!!!
