My grandson, whom I take care of, is 7 1/2 months old. He has been an unusual sleeper from birth. Right now he typically takes a 2-3 hour nap in the late morning/early afternoon and then another smaller nap, typically an hour or less about dinner time. A month ago, we were lucky to get him to sleep for longer than 45 minutes at a time and he woke every 2-3 hours (sometimes more) at night. I have 4 kids of my own plus I have been a child care provider in my home for 20 years. Nap schedules typically just aren't, well...typical. Every child seems to have their own needs and preferences. I don't count on any kind of consistent nap schedule until the kids are closer to 2 years old. In addition to my grandson, I currently care for a 20 month old boy and a girl who will be 4 the end of Dec. This fall he has been transitioning from a morning and an afternoon nap, each about 1 1/2 hours long to one afternoon nap about 2 1/2-3 hours long. She is in the process of transitioning from a 2 hour afternoon nap to no nap at all. She is at a hard place where no nap makes for a cranky evening, but a nap makes for late bedtime. Nap time transitions are hard, but it usually is short-lived.

My 24 month old naps from 1:00 to 2:30 and sleeps at night from 7:30 to 6:45 in the morning.
I am also a SAHM who provides in home day care to other children. Here are their nap schedules:
2 year olds: 1:00 to 3:00
9 month old and 14 month old: 9:30 to 11:00 and 1:30 to 3:00
(The nine month old recently gave up a third nap around 4:30 that lasted about 30 minutes.)
2 month old: it varies, usually stays awake about an hour and a half before taking a little nap. I haven't started working on a nap routine too much with her yet.

Most babies and children under 3 will sleep anywhere from 12-16 hours per day. Even if your child sleeps well at night, and especially if they don't they will need two naps until they are a little over one year old. Usually those naps last between 1-2 hours. At about 18mos, your child will probably begin to sleep only one nap per day, but expect that nap to last almost as long as the two naps he or she was taking before. Just because children are more able to stay awake and active, does not mean they need less sleep.

My 3 month old is not a big napper.. he only naps about 2-3 hours a day, broken up. He naps best between the hours of 9am and 2pm otherwise then, he's pretty much awake until bedtime at 8pm. He sleeps better at night.. about 10.5-11 hours.
