Gold deposits. The most important deposits were found in Cleburne, Tallapoosa, Clay and Randolph Counties. Only Cleburne and Tallapoosa Counties produced more than 20,000 ounces of gold. Gold found in Alabama comes from lode and placer sources.

I believe it is the Coosa River where you can pick up good size garnets out of the river bed. Everyone knows about it though so the large stuff has been picked clean.

We've got garnets out the wazoo here from all the metamorphism.....but I don't know what percentage of them could be considered gem quality.
