Is it "just like man's vanity and impertinence to call an animal dumb because it is dumb to his dull perceptions?" - Quote from Mark Twain

~~~ Mark Twain was a very wise man. Here's another of his quotes that is very true....."If man could be crossed with the cat it would improve man, but it would deteriorate the cat." - Mark Twain - I've been blessed with knowing hundreds of cats in my life,and I haven't meet a stupid one yet. I can't say that about all the people I have met. I've never met a "bad" or "ugly" cat or dog either. I wish I could say the same about people. I realise I'm going to get plenty of thumbs down for this answer, but I don't really care. It's the truth. If more people would take the time to bond with their pets,maybe they'd learn something from them. Then hopefully we wouldn't live in a society where insensitive individuals wouldn't treat cats and dogs as disposable toys,and there wouldn't be as many needy strays out there. ~~~
**** no! Pets are family and companions and I love them just as much as you do! I too call myself a mommy to my kitten, male that I rescued off the streets. He was only 4 months old but I adopted him after some other douch abandoned him. I don't really take care of him like you do with the food and medication and all since I'm only 14 and don't even have enough money to buy a chocolate bar but since I'm the one who cared for him when no one else even knew he was alive, I consider him my baby. And I make sure people know it! It's very sweet you adopted the kitten into your life and even sweeter and cuter that you consider yourself his mother because you are. His birth mother may not be with him, since he was a stray but if people can adopt an orphan and call them their son or daughter you can do the same for an orphan kitten, and people should admire and respect you for being such a big hearted kind person!
I love all my pets, but they are not just dumb, they are stupid. Dumb does not mean stupid. It simply means unable to speak. People have always assumed that a mute was stupid, so they don't see the difference. We give our animal friends credit for the things they can do, usually instinctive, and their ability to learn. But, compared to a severely retarded child, they would be institutionalized. We have 8 cats, 3 dog's, 12 chickens, and 4 goats, all are pets.
My wife has a cat who has trained us to understand her needs and annoyances. We learned slowly because of our dependence on words.
At one time there were 26 cats in the house of my parents and some of them were just as stupid as stupid people. The smart ones had an EQ higher than most humans.
Animals do have intelligence and feelings. They have more sensory input and they listen to their instinct more, so their world view is vastly different than ours, but they are brave, loyal, caring, greedy, slothful, affectionate - many things that we are to this day. They are not getting an Engineering degree anytime soon, but they can sniff a bush and tell get more information about the goings-on in the neighborhood than an entire day of texting will tell you!
depends on the animal, and on the person!
my cocatiel is stupid, but nice and pretty. she is dumber than a cat. My dad's african grey is very smart, but difficult, tricksy, and annoying/persistant. he is smarter than a dog.
Although people who think all birds are dumb only think this because they lack the intelligence to learn to intereact with a creature so alien as a bird. Parrots can be taught to ask for what they want, such as water or seeds, by name. They dont' mimic sounds, they can learn to talk -- with a very limited vocabulary.
goldfish and aren't too smart. i had one in college.
I take umbrage at your question, but do believe that Twain was right. Just because we can't translate cat talk doesn't mean they can't understand ours. For me however their actions speak louder than words. When Nena my chubby tuxedo cat wraps her paws around my arm, and when Anna my calico taps me on the wrist, they are telling me that they love me. Or could it be that they desire to be fed?
Well I can only vouche for my cat.. and she tells me what she wants.. No animals arent stupid.. its mankind that is stupid..You have to interpret the sounds that they are making in order to know what they are saying. I learned that long years ago.
Sam has this one pegged. My cat learned two languages in his first year. I still only speak one with any fluency.
