I was just studying about some Tibetan tribes that practice "fraternal polyandry" that is where two, three or four brothers share one wife. What do you guys think about this?
Remember not all cultures are as sex obsessed as most Western Cultures.

I have heard of brotherly love, but I think this would cause some major disagreements.I wonder how they decide who gets the wife on what nights, and what if she has a headache on that night. LOL Fisherman's joke earlier made me think of that.

It must be okay in their culture and according to their laws. It does not fit into my life style and I already have one trained why would I want to train 3-4 more. Anyways, I think the reason for the Tibetan to practice this so as to keep the population down. It would mean that four men would have their sexual needs met and the woman would be pregnant once a year. Poor lady. Rather, than have three of the men with pregnant wives. This is about the needs, wants, and survival of the community. In the Old Testament the practice of polygamy was to increase the population. For example, some say that Jeffs heard the calling to populate.

In Tibet where the practice is particularly popular among the priestly Skye class as well as poor small farmers. As to the latter variety, as some males return to the household, others leave for a long time, so that there is usually one husband present. Also, polyandry serves as a form of birth control- no matter how many partners a woman has, she can only have one pregnancy at a time (as opposed to polygamy- a husband with multiple wives might impregnate all of them, thus having more children.)
It is only one more example of male dominance. We are and have been working to overcome this in America but the rest of the world will hopefully catch up. All I can really say is ''Poor woman''

It makes sense if there is a shortage of females in the tribe.
Biologically speaking, females are the more important of the sexes in terms of reproduction. 1 man can theoretically impregnate X number of women, but 1 female can only be impregnated 1 man at a time. So, females are the most important in an society when it comes to carrying on the species... besides, fraterna polyandry makes buying gifts easier.

I think is a very interesting way of live, keeping in mind how many cultures, religions, groups, etc... find the idea of a man to have several wives. It could be a little tiring for the wife, not meant in a sexual sense!

Wouldn't that wear out the wife early? I am more into one man, one woman. That should be enough for everyone unless only women will be born in the world for the next 100 years or so, then my attitudes may change some.

Not for me but obviously works for them. There has to be a cultural reason for it. Usually it is the other way around where one man has many wives.... Women carry the next generation and one man can impregnate many women. Of course, many women used to die at a young age too...perhaps they were keeping spares around -- HA!

Maybe there is a shortage of women.

Live and let live I say.

I don't think that we have any right to say that this is right or wrong, in that we don't have the background in that culture that would allow us to view this as an acceptable occurrence.

Can it not just be written off as "cultural differences" taking place within their own borders? It would only be our business to pass judgement on this if they were to try to emigrate as a family unit to North America.
