From what I've seen at Irish competitions boys costumes are very simple. Black trousers and long sleeved buisness shirts and a tie. But a really bright colourful tie. Some people at my school made ties out of sequin material, it was really effective.

So you don't really need to pay a fortune or anything for a costume and he can even wear it again!

The guys at my school for competitions wear this:

Hope this helps :)

Is your son a beginner? If so, most Irish dance schools have a class costume or like our school did for the boys, there were guidelines on what to wear. For example, boys at our school wore long sleeved white dress shirts with a black tie, black pants, and black socks.

I know boys who are competing in championships often wear brightly colored shirts and vests or cummerbunds.. though I'm not sure exactly where these shirts are purchased from. I think the vests or cummerbunds are often made for the dancer.

you can also keep an eye out at http://www.dance-again.com/boys-costumes.html.

Also your son's dance teacher might have a good place to look for a dance costume. Good luck!

Here's a picture of the costumes (boys towards the bottom) used at the Clarkson School of Irish Dance:

This place has tons of stuff for men & boys -- there's even a size chart.

does he want a kilt?
Why not go with plain black pants, and solid color dark shirt and tie?
Kilts are not so popular anymore.
