Ask how many use cosmetics of any kind and do a presentation on the use of animals in development of cosmetics. You could finish with a questionnaire about use of animals in research.

Another option is to do something about health care, and whether universal health care is a good idea. I am sure there will be strong opinions on both sides of the issue, and it is a topic that affects everyone.

Healthy Lifestyle - talk about good diet habits (not dieting) and exercise. Research the right portion sizes, required daily exercise length and etc. Ask the audience how much they think is a serving of pasta or how many minutes a day a person should exericise. Highlight overweight statistics and the diseases obesity can lead to. But don't do this if there are some really fat people in your class. You can call it: "How to Battle Freshman 15".

Charities and Volunteering - talk about way to give (since it is around Holiday season) and volunteering opportunities in you area (check out volunteer match.com). Ask people to raise hands if they volunteered or ask them how many of them would like to.

Do a presentation on how to keep good credit score and how to use credit wisely/built credit. There are many article in financial magazines (mostly online). MNBC Money and Kiplings has loads of articles on this matter. Ask how many people have more than 3 credit cards (which is bad) or how many checked their score in the last year.

What are you interested in and/or good at? Argue a controversial topic only if your heart's in it. Otherwise, can you explain to the class how to do something (complicated enough to take at least seven minutes to explain)? It would be an opportunity to bring in visuals and show as well as tell. For example, if you're good at make-up, you could do a classmate's face and explain as you go along what you're doing and why. (Not such a good suggestion if you're a guy!) Or is there some high-tech skill that you have and many of your friends wish they had? If you can lug in the equipment and hook it up, you could demonstrate how to do it.

You might as well be controversial.
Discuss the divide between Humanities majors--such as English--and science majors. Is English relevant? Is grammar? Is history important to learn?
There's probably far more money and careers in science. Why not close up the English departments and head over to the labs!

College courses, talk about the lack of VA benefits there are for our veterans. I'm sure there is one veteran in your class.
Start off asking how many veterans are here. This involves the audience.
