If you go to YouTube, they'll actually show you how to draw a cow.

A cow from the side is basically a long rectangle. The neck attaches very low, the front legs are vertical, the back go out a bit and attach thicker at the body than the front do. It's the head that gives me problems, the body usually is very easy.

Try calling up google.com for 'dairy cow breeds' and checking the pictures.

You can see the back is nearly a straight line. The front legs have to be vertical to 'plant' the weight of the cow, they're thin with the knees halfway between the chest and the ground. You can always see a hip and backbone in the shadow of the side. The tail looks like it's hanging over a ledge, the hips push it out away from the body like that. The udder is based on a circle, showing out betwen the back legs somewhat. The neck goes up like a horse (no arching!) and the head is shaped like a triangle with the bottom tip blocked off. Eyes -- if you draw a line from the top of the head to the muzzle, divide it in half then divide THOSE halves in half, the eyes are up on the top quarter. They usually have a small dewlap in front, and those major milk veins on the belly going back to the udder. Four teats on the udder, not very long either. Two toes per foot with the colored part slanting down on the back of the foot, and the hanging toes on the front feet. Hocks on the back feet.
