I don't think there is a real difference between them. The assumptions for each is the same, The regression line is found from the computation of the variance of x, the variance of y, and the xy co-variance, but the r^2 and other variance parameters are computed separately. The LSOS line significance is found from the ANOVA computation of the variance of y, or regression about the mean, and that which is removed by linear regression, and the residual. The r^2 can be readily computed, but the regression line parameters have to be computed seperately.
