popular culture is often translated my media - it spreads FAST.

Traditionally, a folk custom ( folk song, folk tale, whatever) is transmitted by word of mouth, between individuals, one at a time.

Popular culture is normally centrally distributed - say Beethoven or Mozart touring and playing and becoming popular and being asked to go additional places.
Folk culture is normally locally developed and spreads by individual contact at the boundries of the cultural area. Instead of a folk troop traveling to perform, Sally and Joe visit the market in Gelph and while there notice a dress style or folk song and when they return to their hometown not far away they reproduce the behavior or style and thus is spreads slowly as a part of life.
If the Ballet Folklorico comes to Dallas, that is part of the pop culture scene. If I go to Mesquite (a suburb) and see people dancing in the same style and come back and start dances in the style, then it is folk custom. Folk custom is largely being buried by pop culture.

Popular culture is just was is popular now. for example the iphone. in ten years it will be talked about but not really remembered. where as something like 9-11 is remembered and will always be remembered and is now part of our custom to remember.
