Ideally, the athletes should be subject to 100% periodic testing, but the cost of that is quite high. Random sampling is found to have the same deterrent effect at a lower cost.

High school teaches values and the consequences of poor decisions. Drug taking is a poor decision, and is also illegal. Thus, requiring drug testing is a teaching vehicle.

Moreover, the student is entering into an unwritten agreement that he will be given more attention and more use of educational resources (uniform, bus transportation, coaches, etc.) than are other students, and in return agrees to this. So the testing is an agreement the student enters into of his (or her) free will.

yes they should. high school is a time when a lot of kids start experimenting with drugs...even the athletes. If they are subject to random drug tests, then if they are caught using drugs there are more options to intervene before things get bad. also, if they know they are subject to random drug tests they will most likely not do drugs in the first place for fear of being caught.

Yes, Why because these days we have role models that do drugs to boost their performance of their sport and the younger generation could fall into seeing their hero do this and get away with it and not realize the harm they are doing to themselves.
Or if they want to be a athlete then they won't have to worry about a drug test because they shouldn't be doing drugs in the first place.

Yes.

You have to have passing grades to be on high school teams. So why should you be allowed to play if you're not only doing something illegal, but doing something illegal that EFFECTS your health?

It's not right to do drugs and be on a team. It's selfish and wrong, especially when your team mates may NEED to have every player in great shape so that the team makes it throughout the season, to the big games where there are people from colleges looking to see who's worthy of a scholarship.

So yes, random drug testings should be done, not to bust someone, but to help the team.

My initial reaction was to say "Absolutely, yes!" However, upon reflection, it may not be as simple as it seems. I would say a "guarded" yes - but they should be told before making the decision to participate in high school sports that random testing will be part of the program, they should be required to sign a statement to that effect - or parents sign a statement to that effect in the case of minors, and go from there.

No, I think drug testing randomly is a invasion of privacy. They should only be able to test if there is a reasonable doubt or maybe just for state championship games and stuff like that. Also maybe those being considered for sports scholarships.

Yeah.. they should. But they shouldn't be subject to random hair drug tests. Those retain a lot of information and can include stuff in your past that your over already.

Yes. Because too many kids are being pressured into using steroids and other performance enhancing drugs. The other drugs, weed, speed, and their likes will always show upin the kids performance. Very few drug users can play sports too. But Steroids are a different story.

I think that they should.

They are high school athletes and they are, by law, supposed to be drug-free. Random drug tests are a practical way to catch someone red-handed.

Absolutely test them todays generation of Kids cheat like hell at everything: chess, sports, their school work it's sad they take shortcuts because society tells them it's a me myself and I world and they have no moral compass of right and wrong they simply don't care about that.

Oh and Professional Athletes are the worst example the Kids could follow Parents don't look at them as role models of flying straight and playing the right way.
