It would not be possible to follow a star for the very reason you just stated. A star over your head moves with you as you travel. Not to mention the star went north, south, east, west, and stood still. You are correct to ask a great question!
1st question you have to ask. Why did pagan astrologers care about a jewish God?
Answer: I guy named Daniel. King Neb... in Babylon had a dream. None of his wise men could tell him his dream. Neb. began killing the wise men but a Jew in captivity in Babylon told Neb. his dream. Because of Daniel the rest of the wise men were saved. Then, Daniel was appointed the Head wise man of Babylon.
The wise men cared about a jewish God, because it was the God of their greatest wise man.
Anytime God physically appeared in the Old Testement of the bible, he appeared with a manifestation of...light. The burning bush. The pillar of fire that led the Israelites out of Egypt. The mercy seat in the temple.
It wasnt a star it was the Shikinah Glory. God manifest on Earth in the body of Jesus and he was arrayed in the shikinah Glory.
Why did the wise men follow this bright light they saw? Well in the book of Daniel written in Aramaic, the language of the wise men, was a prophecy that detailed the exact date Jesus would appear on Earth. Daniel wrote the prophecy.
They deduced from the prophecy that this must be about the time Christ would appear. Daniel 9:24-26

It is now thought (by historians, not the clergy) that the story of the Magi and the Star of Bethlehem is actually a spin on the probability that the origins of the story lie in ASTROLOGY.
It is now thought that the Magi were eminent astrologers, who forecast the birth of Christ, by reading the stars. Although astrology was quietly tolerated by the grassroots clergy, it was not considered helpful to the objectives of the editors of the Gospels, for it to figure in the story of Christ, so it was somewhat altered.
Other related stories, like the flight from Israel and the slaughter of the innocents, are not supported in historical records, or archaeology. Herod might have been a bit of a boyoh, but there is absolutely no evidence (other than the Gospels) to suggest that he slaughtered newborn babies, wholesale.

It's not a myth my friend. Its not logical either. Understanding the bible does not come by logic. It comes by the Holy Spirit. The star was not a "Star". It only looked like a star to the Wise men. The star was a cluster of angels whose brightness led the wisemen to their destination.
The shepards saw this same star as angelic hosts.
I suggest you read the bible for yourself. even if you don't understand or believe in it.
It's just something about hearing things from the horses mouth.
If you don't have a bible, there is a free online bible that has hundreds of translations at www.blueletterbible.org
Goodluck!

All the things in the bible that make no sense, and you choose that to question? Not that I believe the story, but if a star is directly above any given location, then walking toward that star will lead you to that location. If we're going to assume God exists and is as Christianity describes him, placing that star would not be a difficult feat for him, at all.

Well of course it did not that was just a story. Did you ever hear the Cornish saying. "The farther you go east the more certain you are that wise men never came from there."

How could the north star lead sailors in their attempts at navigation?
The star didn't show them exactly where Jesus was, it led them to the general area, which is why they had to stop by King Herod's to consult the scholars on the prophesied birthplace.
