As seen by the answers, though mostly Americans, there *is* no international agreement for what constitutes a continent. This is useful

Frankly, the traditional U.S. teaching of "7" is pretty lame. What is the definition of "continent" that results in 7? I cannot determine it. It seems to be simply a matter of tradition - not one of science or even of definition. The old Trivial Pursuit game named "Oceania" (rather than Australia) as one of the 7 continents. It was a Canadian game, and that was my 1st clue (30 years ago or so) that other countries teach a different collection of continents.

However, I challenge you (or anyone else reading this) to come up with a logical geographical definition of continent (other than a list of continent names) that will result in the 7 continents that we teach here in the U.S. At best, I get 6 (Asia and Europe combined) or 8 (Southern Asia separated from Northern).

That depends entirely on who and where you ask. In the USA, kids are taught that there are 7 continents. In other parts of the world the number is different.

p.s. Oceania is NOT a continent! It's a REGION comprised of the CONTINENT Australia and of ISLANDS in the Pacific Ocean.
