Yes buy her Visitors by Bob Chapman, suitable for everyone not just her. Read it yourself. You can get it on Amazon.

I have always enjoyed novels by Tamora Pierce. I probably started reading them when I was 13 or so. They are full of strong female characters, which is always fun for a girl to read about.

I like the Immortals series (it begins with the book Wild Mage)
The Lioness series (beginning with Alanna of Trebond)
and The Protector of the Small Series (the fist book being Fist Test)

It really depends on her personality though. I would probably just go for a gift card so she can choose the book that she wants to read. If she's anything like me she won't be able to walk 2 feet into a book store without spotting 5 new books that she must have. =)

If you like reading non-fiction, about what goes on nowadays - I recommend these two -

1) "Under the Loving Care of the Fatherly Leader"
written by Bradley K. Martin

2) "Rogue Regime"
written by Jasper Becker

These two well-written books give an insight about the North Korean Government.

Fiction?

Try all the books written by Clive Cussler.

The hero is Dirk Pitt, with his sidekick Al Giordino. These are well-written.

If your friend loves animals and also would like to appreciate simple but effective writing i would recommend, "All creatures great and small" by James Herriot.
If she wants to get initiated in Science fiction then classic books of Asimov, " I robot, Foundation series " are a good start. Also these provide excellent treatise on English language.
If she is interested in good detective stories, books written by Arthur Conan Doyle or Agatha Christie are a good start. Again their control on English language is superb.

A Princess of Mars by Edgar Rice Burroughs. It's got everything -- Fantasy, Science Fiction, Romance, Adventure, a Handsome Hero and a Beautiful Heroine. Yup, can't go wrong with Burroughs!

It would help if you gave her interests, but here goes:

http://www.life-after-harry-potter.com

Included is a list of only the best sorcery fantasy books, grade reading level, a short review of each book along with a brief summary of adult content. There is also a "Reader's Choice" list of favorite books, and a list of heroine sorcery fantasy books.

Also these: http://www.interleaves.org/~rteeter/grtother.html#great . Lots of lists, but I especially like the Harvard Classics list - all the books that I should have read, but (mostly) never did.

Finally, these: http://www.awardannals.com/wiki/Honor_roll:Genres - pick your genre, find the best books ranked by how many awards they've won.

I hope this helps. BTW, I also really liked the suggestion of a bible - but I suspect that, if you're a Christian, she already has one.

Hi there.
Difficult without knowing her, but I don't think you could go wrong with the Abhorsen trilogy by Garth Nix.
If she is feeling more epic, consider "Flowers in the Attic" by Virginia Andrews.
If she is more poetic, "I Capture the Castle" by Dodie Smith.
Good luck, Steve.
