Or is it merely another testament to General Shinseki's assessment that we needed more boots on the ground to begin with, and therefore more evidence regarding Rummy's egomaniacal incompetence?

you know what?

at this point, if 'calling' the surge a great success is what it will take to get the troops either redeployed or sent home - then fine.

the surge is a GREAT SUCCESS!

No, the stated objective has not been met, FAILING but not over yet. The surge has pumped out even more BILLIONS of our tax dollars for those war profiteers like Haliburton so that would make it a success in DICK cheney's eyes but not the MAJORITY of American's eye's.

Does calling it a success mean our troops are coming home?
if not then lets face the reality, that one week they are calling it success, and the next they are saying the violence has got worse in some other part of the country.
usually calling it a success is followed by Bush asking for more money.
I guess it depends on what statistics you are using, and which areas of the country you are excluding.

Ask soldiers who enlisted or re-inlisted after we went to Iraq. (do not get the opinions of those who signed up for bonuses and the GI bill and are pissed off that they are there) Ask someone who is FROM Iraq. Those are the people who will tell you that the surge has helped quite a bit, and that our soldiers are making a lot of progress in training Iraqis to become self-sufficient in protection, and that Iraqi citizens are VERY MUCH better off than they were. I have friends and family in Iraq (WHO ENLISTED OR RE-ENLISTED to be there) as well as some very close friends from Iraq who are horrified that we might pull out and leave their families in a situation ALMOST AS BAD as Saddam was.
